Almost Home

Hither and yonder. Hill and dale. Business and pleasure. Starbucks and Stonehenge.

Weary, frizzy and clogged with Jet Rock Grill cheese sticks, she wanders into the W. H. Smith bookstore to while away 10 minutes in the Philly airport. Passed the morally unembarrassed businessman leering through FHM. Passed the Liberty Bell T-shirts and the sodoku books. Hmmm. Redbook. House Beautiful. O. Coastal Living. Metropolitan Home.

"Excuse me," says a short, pink, wrinkly woman with so few strands of cottony white hair that you could see her pink scalp and blue brain veins. "I saw you and your husband bless yourselves before you ate. Are you Catholic?"

"Yes," she says. "Everywhere we go."

Polite banter followed by discovery of geographic coincidence. Small laughter.

"Well, I hope you have a safe trip home," she says to the pink lady.

"All the best in life to you," the pink lady replies. "All the best in life to you."
